BOB Festival

We spent Sunday the 24th in blazing April heat in the parking lot of the amazing Linden Street Brewery as a part of BOB Festival. It was a day of all my worlds converging as friends’ bands performed, polo teammates and Derailleur folks showed up, and I was happily on the work crew for Cyclecide that day. It was the last day of a week long music festival, so most folks were pooped but there was still a healthy amount of chaos and injuries.

Music festival in the middle of a field with no electrical outlet in sight? No problem. Just attach half a dozen cyclists to a bike powered generator and the rock won’t stop. Totally brilliant, totally fun day that included fender-blendered smoothies and endless bike porn.

Bike to Work Day

My morning commute only goes as far as taking the dogs out for a morning walk, making coffee, and then sitting at a desk that is barely 4 feet away from my bed. Biking to work would frankly be dangerous if I tried it along my current route. Most of my friends are also freelancers and cyclists, and we decided we didn’t want to be left out of Bike To Work Day. We conspired to meet at one of the many support stations early that morning and visit as many stations as we could throughout the city before having to head home (to work).

I wish I’d taken more photos of Jeremy on the Public Bike he was pimping, and a photo of Sally shuttling a giant box attached to her messenger bag. I wish I’d taken photos of Deep and his disco rickshaw and the lady with the fabulous bottle cap earrings. I was just having too much fun feeling like a minnow in a giant streaming school of fish as we pedaled along market which was teeming with bike commuters. We dropped Jeremy off at City Court where he was applying for a market permit, and Sally and I went on to check out the new Buddha sculpture* at City Hall and hear the last of the “yay bikes!” speeches.

* there are a lot of articles about the sculpture “Three Heads Six Arms”, but I found this one most amusing.

heron’s head park

It started pretty simply.
Meet Ruth after work, bike over to the Heron’s Head Park wetlands, look at lovely nature-y things, and go home. The first couple parts went well, and we made a stop at Islais Creek site along the way. It was the “going home” part that fell apart. Our intuition failed us, the bike map lied, attempting a daring leap over a fence ended badly. Then, to top it off, what we thought would be a triumphant pedestrian bridge crossing turned into denial of entry by possibly the only bridge troll I may ever meet in my life. He was very polite about it though, and let us know that he hasn’t let ANYone across that bridge in 5 years, so it’s nothing personal.

homeless garden ferry ride

We got really lucky with the weather and headed north after meeting at Mama’s cafe on Mission. We wound our way up Glen Park and stopped at a community garden along the way. The garden hosts classes on everything from seed cultivating to composting and was brimming with volunteers.

Further on Ruth led us to a garden center inside of Golden Gate Park that exclusively sells native plants of the SF area. There is a weird symbiosis going on with the plant center and the recycling depot that shares its parking lot. Shortly after leaving, we came across a weird scene of a collapsed man with blood streaming out of his ear. Sally was the hero of the day and called for an ambulance. After the ambulance arrived, we continued north to the Presidio and on to GG Bridge.

The view made up for the thick tourist traffic and we eventually made it up to Sausalito. Sandwiches were procured, an empty floating dock was found, and we enjoyed lunch as the temperature dropped. We made it to the ferry with 5 minutes to spare and headed back home.
